Sensitivity to the needs of others can be a very accurate barometer for the health of our souls. If we no longer feel that tug of compassion or concern when hearing of another person's hurts, we know we have grown callused and cold.
What may be causing this in our spiritual life? It could be the result of over-working, or not taking enough time for feeding our own spirit. Maybe we are wrestling with our own pain.
There is a part of us that needs nourishment and healing. If we don't feed ourselves with what is necessary, do not get adequate rest, or have too many walls up, it will become hard for us to empathize with others.
When we find ourselves reacting coldly to other people's problems, we should take a moment to measure own own spiritual pulse. It may be time to take better care of ourselves so we can care more for others.
